A practitioner's take on prenatal vitamins
If you have been listening to my podcast and following my posts for a while, you know how passionate I am about proper nutrition and how that impacts our entire body, especially nutrition for fertility and prenatal care. 95% of women are nutrient DEPLETED going into pregnancy, even despite taking a standard prenatal. This is why I strongly encourage women not only to prioritize their nutrition through whole-food sources before going into pregnancy, but also to add a quality insurance policy with a prenatal that will actually move the needle!
That is why I have been recommending and personally taking Needed Prenatals for years.
However, a big thing I hear from my audience and patients is “If I am struggling with nausea or aversions, I am having a really hard time getting my prenatal in”. And previously, we would have to get creative to open capsules into something they could tolerate or find a way to sneak it in. I especially encourage proper B vitamin intake during the first trimester, since that's when the baby's nervous system and neural tube are forming, a process with high nutrient demands. Needed has officially created an answer to that problem, and that is with their new Prenatal Multi Gummy.
A gummy prenatal I actually can recommend.
The problem with MOST prenatal gummies on the market is that they can be SO void of nutrients. It is very very challenging to pack everything that a woman up a lot of room in a capsule or gummy, and that is why it is often disgracefully low in many prenatals and prenatal gummies on the market, if it’s even included at all.
Their gummy has 4x more nutrition than leading prenatals‡ and 8x the leading prenatal gummy (which remember, gummies can be hard to pack a nutrient punch in, but Needed still found a way!) I love this chart for comparing very common brands nutrient by nutrient.
One reason Needed has been a standard recommendation for me in my practice is that they actively advocate for women’s health research and do research themselves.
The dosages of key nutrients for pregnancy (vitamin D, B6, folate) are at clinically studied dosages. Needed ran an IRB-approved Clinical Study of 235 pregnant women. The result: women taking Needed's dosages of Vitamin D, B6, Selenium, and Zinc had significantly higher blood nutrient levels than women on standard prenatals — nutrients that play essential roles in fetal development, immune health, and supporting a full-term birth.*
I am so happy to have this nutrient-dense prenatal gummy to recommend to patients and clients!
So who is the gummy option good for?
If someone is struggling to take capsules, maybe they are feeling nauseous or having issues swallowing capsules, the gummy can be a very simple (and delicious!) way to ensure intake of key nutrients like folate, vitamin D, and B-vitamins.
If you struggle to be consistent with a prenatal, this could be a good option for you because who doesn’t want a delicious gummy?, I think this will help a lot with consistency and compliance, which is the goal. Personally, I love the gummies, but my daily rotation for this current pregnancy is their capsules JUST because they are a little more nutrient-dense, but there are absolutely times I have been reaching for the gummies because they are SO dang good and incredibly easy to take.
At the end of the day, it comes down to what your specific nutrient needs and demands are. For example, a breastfeeding mama might want their Prenatal Pro, which is their supercharged prenatal for all those extra demands breastfeeding can place. Whereas maybe you are in your early preconception time thinking about slowly getting into a fertility supplement routine–you might easily start with the Needed Prenatal Gummy
Another reason I love their gummies is that there are no sugar alcohols, no synthetic coloring or dyes.
